"Ladies and gentlemen, allows us to introduce Atomçk. If you’ve been keeping an ear to the UK’s fertile grind underground, you probably already know and love this band, but for those of you who haven’t discovered the joys of their lurid, surreal take on the genre yet, here’s a quick primer…" Terrorizer
“Fromselflootingtoanassaultdrivenapproachofbreakingfree” is the crazy name of a new music video from Bielefeld hardcore band SOULS FOR SALE, I interviewed last year. Shot at AJZ Bielefeld by Marek & Hannes & Flo, the track comes from their album “Scavangers”, available for your listening pleasure and free download below.

Formed June 2012 Haut Et Court translated means “High and Short” so that answers the first question and secondly, Math core, also known as math metal, is a rhythmically complex and dissonant style of metal core. It has its roots in bands such as Converge, Botch, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. The term math core is suggested by analogy with math rock. Both math rock and math core make use of unusual time signatures. Math rock groups such as Slint, Don Caballero, Shellac, and Drive like Jehu, have some influence on math core, though math core is more closely related to metal core. Prominent math core groups have been associated with grind core, so I hope that clears up any confusion! (Slightly)
Very little is known about Haut Et Court and the band members seem to want to remain anonymous for some reason known only to them. So as a result I can only review the music that is now listed.
Reviewing a varying number of genres really opens your eyes as to what is “out there” and until this very day have never in my life heard of Math core! Maths was not one of my brilliant subjects at school – nor out of school, suffering from what is known as Dysalculia which was never diagnosed until about six years ago, but as I don’t have to use figures – I am particularly interested.
I do however enjoy a nice bit of brutal music and enjoy the complexities this kind of genre brings to the now very large table of ever expanding sub genres of metal.
Whoa and this is something all its own with experimental passages and grinding with growled guttural vocals. The drumming is somewhat animalistic and feverishly played to yes some very complex rhythms and in true grind style lasts all but a few minutes long but some tracks last a little longer than others.
Its great music to freak out to and I bet Haut Et Court are good strong portrayers on the live circuit – although sadly I am not going to get any chance to see them play live any time soon living in the UK! Unless I win the lottery!
The images of a savage mosh pit and loads of stage diving springs to mind here with complex crossover rhythms and pounding savagery on the kit although saying this some of their breakdowns can be quite slow and experimental in delivery but good to know it does not last long before the immense and intense auditory onslaught continues, which is good for all you grind fanatics out there – me included!
The brutality continues on every track with mesmerising quality. The abrasive rhythms and beats and the accompanying noises keep coming at you at a terrifying pace with its boot firmly planted into the groin area and never lets up for a second. Frenzied and complex just as its genre suggests this is one brute of an album.
This erupting, at times fast paced other times experimentally savage album will satisfy the largest of appetites providing they like the gurgling growls and complicated rhythms – this is definitely growing on me and must go and check out other math core bands. But Haut Et Court is simply biting, raucous and extreme and a great listen to boot!
Now if they used math core to explain the times tables, geometry, and logarithms I may have stood a chance at understanding maths logic… well maybe!
hey everyone, in case you asked yourself what we are up to at the moment and what happens behind the curtains, here are the news.
We finally managed to get a live line up together and started rehearsing a bunch of songs. Everything evolves kinda slowly with our other bands stealing most of our free time at the moment, but we are looking forward to play our first shows in summer 2014.
As all our releases so far are out of print, the mighty Vendetta Records and Wooaaargh will release all our releases so far plus some unreleased material as “in turmoil” on LP in the coming months. We are honored to be now part of the family along bands such as Thou, Ash Borer, Jungbluth, Fell Voices, Graf Orlock, Mörser and Human Cull, Oblivionized and Bitternes Exhumed. “in turmoil” will include our first demo, all songs from the splits with Smutecni Slavnost and Hiveburner, the humane condition EP plus compilation tracks and unreleased material.
And there is even more Wax coming your way. We are currently writing our first LP which is going to be released in Europe through vendetta and through halo of flies in the US. No release date is set till now but we are aiming for late summer of 2014.
There are still several splits planned. One will be with our friends in AST from Ulm/Berlin which have dedicated themselves to their own brand of post-metal, blackened hardcore. they so far have an EP out through Alcoves Records and this split will be there first appearance on vinyl.
April will also bring you a new release in our ambient / drone series. We will put out a split with an old friend of ours. Alex Pearson aka D/A A/D hails from Halifax, Canada and is known for his death industrial / analog worshiping drone madness. He has put out quiet a string of releases through his own label Snapped in Half and through various others and we are glad this worked out. This will be released on Tape through Yehonala Tapes in April 2014. Limited to 66 copies. Don’t sleep on this.
Next up is another drone / ambient EP entitled “Taima” that will see the light of day around june 2014 through Wooaaargh / Puzzle Records (EU) and Tridroid Records (US). Be prepared for some texture laden Sci-Fi themed soundscapes.
thanks everyone for the support and your interest Ancst Collective
